Loving Vincent será el primer largometraje de animación pintado a mano.

La vida de Van Gogh relatada de una manera peculiar: hablarán los personajes de sus cuadros, que intentarán resolver el misterio de su genio tras su muerte, en un formato de falso documental. Van Gogh solo aparecerá puntualmente como una presencia que no habla más allá de la voz en off que lee sus cartas.

Treinta pintores han trabajado durante dos años, hasta completar los 56.800 frames (pintados en óleo sobre lienzo) que componen los 80 minutos de duración de la película.

Loving Vincent está producida por Breakthru Films, productora que ya ganó un Oscar al mejor corto de animación por Peter & The Wolf (2006), versión stop-motion del clásico cuento infantil Pedro y el lobo.
